TSC S01—E07: The Second Pivot Episode

GOOD GOOGLY MOOGLY

Like honestly maybe this is now an almost monthly newsletter? Who could know? It’s literally unknowable.

I love writing. Clicky clackin on the ol’ keyboard.
I hate figuring out what to write. The blank page is a real bastard.

This time we’re talking curation, AI songs about buttholes, the art of doing nothing, and taking a look at the weirdest website I saw this week.

You, trying to read this whole email.

I’m pivoting again, but just a little bit. This project has repeatedly shone a light at a strong and weak point of mine: I can’t pretend to care about a subject.

When I do care, I become knowledgeable fairly quickly. But, (because ADHD) I don’t really get to CHOOSE when I’m interested in something.

Things I’m always interested in are creativity, curation, curiosity, motorsport, the pre-aggregated internet, sport as culture, and trying to be funny to the chagrin of everyone around me.

The pivots?

  • Talking as myself rather than a silly little brand no one knows. It’s easier to be Mitch than to pretend The Sidequest Club is an editorial entity.

  • A focus on curation as creation. Hot links. (Not sausage)

  • Featuring more creators and practitioners. Sometimes this might be a brief interview, but often I’ll just be linking to their work. If you’d like to be featured, send me an email and $5. Kidding. Just the $5 is good.

  • Lastly, sending out episodes here and there that are “good enough” or “link only” episodes. Sometimes you just gotta keep things moving. The Ex Lax approach.

📙 The Bookmarks

Get ready to ogle some linkypoos that really revved my engine this week.

  • Tired of e-commerce websites all looking the same? Me neither cuz I just wanna buy lil treats but GOOD WEIRD SEEMS LIKE THEY WERE TIRED OF IT (Press spacebar to play a game.)

  • When a photograph becomes immortal—on our Dorian Gray Shit.

  • In marketing and advertising, a lot of brands really have one rule: Don’t mess with the logo. Well, this did it and made it the whole campaign, and it’s stunning in its simplicity.

  • Articial Intelligence is creating music and the songs are about buttholes. You’re on notice, Weird Al.

  • I have had a Gerber Shard on my keyring for something like 9 years and it finally broke. So I got this one to replace it. I’ll report back with a review that absolutely no one asked for.

  • If you’re at all into industrial design, 3D work, music, or you sorta think teenage engineering is cool, you gotta check out my boy Carl (Author’s Note: I have never met Carl)

📰 Article of the Week

Turns out there’s something to the fact that the only way I can de-stress is to be away from my phone for at least 6 hours and at THAT point I can finally get bored enough to read a book.

Apparently Max Verstappen missed the memo tho.

It’s time to say goodbye.

You hang up first.

We want your input!
