January is over and I for one am NOT gonna miss it.

There’s an idea out there that hobbies are only supposed to be entertaining, or crafty, or in service of ur stupid little lizard brain. But there are quite a few activities out there that can be fun AND feed that noggin.

It’s time to talk about your language.
No, not the swearing.

Obviously Duolingo isn’t the only or even BEST way to learn a new language. But I just love that creepy little owl, don’t you? (I’m blinking in morse code as I type this)

Thinking about picking up a new language as a hobby?

• As always, we start with the lord of the internet. Reddit. Make sure you dive into /r/languagelearning. They scare me a little but they also make me wonder what could have been.

• Obviously I’m going to suggest Duolingo because I have been #influenced. This is not a referral link because I am far too stupid to be learning a language and writing a newsletter at the same time.

• The best way to learn a language is to SPEAK it. There are lots of apps out there that let you do that. Here’s one of ‘em.

• Watch your favorite movie in another language with native subtitles. Emperor’s New Groove hits different when Kronk slaps you with some Portugese.

Sometimes when I paste things into Notes app I’ll say to myself, “That’ll be a nice little treat later”. And then it never is.
